She sat perched on the back of the tall gray horse. It's tail and mane were a midnight black, waving softly in the breeze. The girl's own hair was a fire reed, pulled back in a ponytail, her bangs covering the left side of her face and hiding the gray/blue color of her eyes. The horse gave a nervous whinny, taking a few steps backwards at the noise coming from the bushes. She glanced down at her bloody, once gray long sleeved shirt, her gaze falling on the handgun tucked into the front of her studded belt. Her hand tightened around the horse's reins, as she reached down with her dominant right hand, drawing the weapon silently. Her black boots, which hugged the curves of her legs, drew closer against the horse, ready to send him into flight. "Here we go, Cobalt." She spoke to the animal, just as though he could understand her. Click. Off went the safety.
The Walker gave a growl, hungrily and carelessly throwing itself out in the open. It reached it's filthy hands out, clawing at the air as it got closer, those feverish eyes set on its next meal. Flesh hung from it's mouth, stuck in it's decaying teeth. She took aim, her breath slowly releasing as she pulled the trigger. The crack of the bullet spilt the moring air, ringing out across the eerily quiet mountain. Cobalt reared at the sound, his front hooves smashing the soft grass beneath his feet as the creature gave a strangled cry. The murderous sound was cut off as it smacked the ground, blood flowing from the circular wound in the center of the forehead.
Zombies. The dead has risen. Who know? It had been nearly four months now since the world had fallen to ruins. Fear the living, just as much as you fear the dead. People where capable of anything now-a-days. Not that they weren't before, but now, there was simply no consequence.
"Alex!" The sound of her name in the distance, shook her from the gruesome image of the Walker. She pulled the reins of the horse instinctively to the left, turning him around and sending him off into a full gallop. They sped through the forest, the blur of green surrounding them. Water flew up in a splash as they ran through a puddle, soaking her light blue jeans and sending a shiver through her spine despite the warmth of the morning. Spring was on its way out, but summer wasn't in a desperate hurry to get here. The horse's heavy breathing was drowned out by a neigh as he leapt out of the path, leaving the cover of the woods behind. This was the heart of their "camp", away from the crowded cities but still within reach of finding supplies. It wasn't much, but all they had.
"Yeah?" She dismounted from the horse, leading him to the make-shift pen composed of old wire they had rigged together. She unhooked a section of the fencing, the horse trotting forward instantaneously. She gave her companion a greatful pat on the back before closing off the pen and pacing back towards her partner. Ellie kicked a rock through the dirt, her gray orbs casted downwards. "We can't stay here, the danger is coming closer everyday. It's only a matter of time." This was the truth, she knew it as soon as she spoke it. If something wasn't done, death would become inevitable.
